Actress Asin reveals she is an avid reader and her passion keeps her occupied most of the time.
"I am extremely passionate about reading and like to read about anything and everything under the sun. Right from fiction to non-fiction to something as heavy as philosophical gyaan to something as light and entertaining as Archie comics, the habit of reading has been deeply inculcated in me," Asin reveals.
The actress adds, "I was always fond of books right since my childhood days. Even as a teenager books were my company. Not that I did not have friends but books kept my occupied most of the time. Even today when I travel I always looking for books. I am always on my toes looking for new stuff especially when am at the airport. As soon as I enter one the first thing that I do is visit the book store there. Funny as it may sound but the bookstore staff at Mumbai and Chennai airport are well familiar with me by now. In fact the staff at the book store in Chennai airport know me so well that the minute they spot me, they keep a pile of Archie comics ready for me to just pick up."
Asin digs masala films
Asin's name is fast getting equated to entertainment. Though she started off with the relatively serious Ghajini and London Dreams, her choice of recent films (Ready, Housefull 2, Bol Bachchan) has pretty much established that she has her eye on 'masala' entertainment that sets the cash registers ringing. While one looks forward to her getting another Rs 100 crore film in her kitty (she already has three to her name), Asin continues to be nonchalant about the progress she has made so far while being happy about the choices she has been making.
“Somehow I have a soft corner for picking movies which are fun and emotional entertainers,” says Asin who has no inhibition in admitting that commercial cinema is what she is aiming at for years to come as well, “That's the kind of space I have chosen for myself in Hindi cinema and I have no intentions of diluting that. Bol Bachchan continues in that direction. It is a typical Rohit Shetty film which is entertainment, entertainment and more of entertainment. Of course, there is a solid story running as well with ingredients like action, 'masala', music and comedy thrown in for good measure.”
In this entertaining affair, while she returns with her London Dreams co-star Ajay Devgn, there is a definite tuning that she has managed to build with Abhishek Bachchan as well. Though the two are not paired opposite each other in Bol Bachchan, Asin is looking forward to a film that brings them together in a more conventional setup.
“I would love to work with him as a pair,” smiles Asin, “One of the common things we share is good knowledge about South cinema and music. While I have of course been in that industry for quite some time, Abhishek too knows so much despite not working in a South film. He has this huge collection of South movies and songs. Moreover, he has been to Chennai many times and knows people in the industry. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised when he told me that even before I stepped into the Hindi film industry with Ghajini, he had seen quite a few of my South films and liked them. Of course I was flattered.”
While it was flattery that came Asin's way, her female co-star Prachi Desai had some pranks waiting for her when she landed on the sets of Bol Bachchan. Even though Asin tried to dissuade the all-boys gang (Ajay Devgn, Abhishek, Rohit Shetty) to take Prachi for a ride, they would have none of it.
Laughs Asin, “Yeah, everyone decided to play a prank on Prachi and that too on the first day of her shoot. I told these boys ki chalo jaane do, aaj pehla din hai. However, everyone just ganged up and pulled a fast one on her. She was asked to say a dialogue which was not a part of the script. When she unknowingly mouthed the dialogue, Ajay and others just couldn't stop laughing. I just took her aside and told her that it was just a prank. She being a sport didn't mind it either.”
While all these incidents did add spice on the sets, how about all the sweet talks of 2 States falling in her lap? Is there something happening in that direction?
“See, I have not been approached for 2 States. There is no news or development that has come my way. Of course, I have read 2 States; it is a very funny book. Let's see what happens because even though I have been hearing these rumours, I don't know what's happening on the film,” says Asin before signing off.
